Amber

It’s been a few days since I stopped things on the couch with Rhys, and I haven’t seen the man at all. And believe me, I’ve caught myself looking more than I’d care to admit.

Who am I kidding? I like the guy. I more than like him. I want him with every part of my body, even my heart. It should have me swinging from the chandelier—if I had one, that is—but I’m not. Instead, I’m confused. Rhys is the first man I’ve ever considered going all the way with. I’ve saved my first time for my one and only, the man who would be my husband and would be my first and last everything. We’d have the same ideals, beliefs, and vision for an ecologically sustainable future together. Rhys and I have chemistry, there’s no denying that, but we’re so different in our views about the magnificent mountain we live next to that there’s absolutely no way we’re meant to be.

If he truly was my soulmate, surely it wouldn’t be about me needing to get as close to him as physically possible; about dreaming of his lips on mine; his body pressing into me; the very big, very eager part of him rolling against the equally aroused part of me... No. It’d be a meeting of mind and body. Rhys and I only have the body part going for us. Why can’t I get him out of my head?

Never has a man distracted and taken over my mind, body, and soul like Rhys Cooper has. I’ve never dreamed of a man naked in my bed with me like I have the past three nights since Rhys kissed me and touched me after that rescue. I wake up every morning with a light sheen of sweat covering my body despite the below-freezing temperatures outside, and a deep-seated ache inside me I’ve never experienced before. An ache I know only one man can sate. Rhys.

If only he wasn’t so pig-headed and annoying, I could focus on the outstanding qualities he has—his body, his mouth…

Stop, Amber! I have to be strong, stay the course, and avoid the man. It’s the only way.

My thoughts are interrupted by a knock at my back door. It’s late and I haven’t heard any vehicles returning next door—believe me, I’ve been straining my ears to every sound—so I have no idea who it could be.

“Hello?” I ask, standing with my hand on the knob, not yet ready to unlock the door.

“Dimples, it’s me,” Rhys says from the other side. “I need to talk to you.”

I frown, my head jerking back even though I know he can’t see me. “Why?” I ask, carefully.

“It’s important. Just open the door.”

I look down and groan, I’m wearing my ‘at home’ clothes—a baggy hoodie with Captain Planet on the front, a tank top underneath and no bra, and then thermal footed long-johns. It’s the most unsexy, not-what-I-want-the-hot-infuriating-neighbor-to-see-me-in outfit I could have ever chosen to wear. Even my underwear aren’t my favorite ones. They’re full-brief, just-before-laundry-day ones.
